Exotica [Soundtrack OST] 1994 Mychael Danna: An Interview with the Composer and Director

If you plan to root for Bombay Jayashri, Oscar nominee for the opening track of Ang Lee's Life Of Pi, at the Academy Awards on February 24, spare a thought for another first-time nominee. Canadian music composer Mychael Danna, who is in line for two Oscars, for Music (Original Song) with Jayashri, and Music (Original Score), is virtually an Indian by work, life and inspiration. The 54-year-old has already picked up a Golden Globe award for the soundtrack of Life Of Pi. From Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan's cult favourite Exotica (1994) to Mira Nair's Kama Sutra, A Tale of Love (1996), the Toronto-based composer has pioneered the art of blending orchestral elements with non-Western, especially Indian, sounds even as he has churned out tunes for big-ticket films such as the Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball (2011) and surprise Oscar-winner Little Miss Sunshine (2006).And now, Life Of Pi. Danna never imagined that Yann Martel's book would, or could, be filmed. But once Ang Lee took on the project, it was perhaps inevitable that Danna, with his strong connections to Canada and India, would compose the music for the film. "About five years ago, Ang called me. He was kind of laughing and said, 'You'll never believe what I'm working on and you have to work on it. You were born to do this.' He said, 'You're Canadian, and it's a Canadian novel about a boy from India who's travelling to Canada. You're married to an Indian woman and you love Indian music, this is for you," Danna told india today from Los Angeles, hours after picking up his Golden Globe on January 13.
